We consider original contributions from experienced and emerging writers via Submittable. We consider interviews, reviews, art, profiles, essays, photos essays, and news articles about food and drink, health, law, politics, lifestyles—as long as it pertains to Illinois and the cannabis industry.
We prefer finished work to pitches. We favor work with a human touch that accurately features/profiles Illinoisans, but we also accept all types of writing, from quirky tutorials to heavily researched news articles. Our word count is flexible but 350-600 words work best.
All work has to be previously unpublished in print and online. At ILNJ, we believe in the Oxford comma, and as such, we refuse to use AP as our house style. Instead, we prefer to stick with the Illinois theme and use Chicago Manual of Style.
Expect one month or less for a decision. Please do not query us or send another manuscript until one month has passed. ILNJ takes First Serial Rights. All other rights remain with the author. We sometimes are able to pay an honorarium for contributions, but not always.
